State of Decay 3 Co-op
State of Decay 3 supports online co-op for up to 4 players in a shared world — and teammates are no longer tethered to the host. Confirmed at the June 7, 2026 gameplay reveal, this multiplayer redesign directly addresses the most common complaint about State of Decay 2's co-op.

Untethered: the State of Decay 2 leash is gone
In State of Decay 2, co-op partners were kept within range of the host player — the series' most cited multiplayer frustration. State of Decay 3 removes that restriction: teammates can spread out across the map and act independently, looting one corner of the world while you defend a settlement in another. On a world about four times the size of a single SoD2 map, that freedom is structural, not cosmetic.
Shared world and asynchronous progress
State of Decay 3 runs a shared world with asynchronous gameplay — the world's progress carries on being shared even when teammates aren't online. You don't need all four players connected to keep a community moving. It pairs with the new settlement layer, where each player can run up to three bases inside a connected community network. And since the game hits Game Pass on day one, squadmates on Xbox or PC can join at launch without buying a copy.
What's still unanswered
- Cross-play: outlets report full cross-play across platforms, but official documentation hasn't been published. We treat it as "reported" until Microsoft details it.
- PvP: nothing announced either way.
- Local co-op: only online co-op has been mentioned; no split-screen or couch mode has come up in any official material.
