What is State of Decay 3?
State of Decay 3 is the third mainline entry in Undead Labs' zombie survival series, following State of Decay (2013) and State of Decay 2 (2018). The world is about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map and fully open from the moment you start. New Plague Nests act as dynamic hubs of enemy encounters, and each player can run up to three settlements that form a community network — alongside series staples like permadeath. A reveal six years in the making
The game was first announced in July 2020 with a CGI cinematic — at a point when, by the studio head's own admission, the game was little more than "a Word document." The June 2026 reveal was the opposite: 100% in-game capture, with the over-the-shoulder camera confirmed as the actual playable view.
