State of Decay 3 vs State of Decay 2

The confirmed headline changes in State of Decay 3: a map about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, untethered 4-player co-op in a shared world, up to three settlements per player, Unreal Engine 5 — and the series' first PlayStation release. Here is every difference that's actually official, and what still can't be compared.

The map: bigger, and open immediately

Undead Labs describes the world as "about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map" — note the wording: one SoD2 map, not all of SoD2's maps combined. It is also fully open from game start. The map page tracks what's known about the world itself; its name and regional setting are still unannounced.

Co-op: the tether is gone

State of Decay 2's most criticized multiplayer limit was the leash keeping co-op partners near the host. State of Decay 3 confirms untethered co-op: four players can split up across the map and act independently, and the shared world means your community progresses even while friends are offline. Full breakdown on the co-op page.

Settlements: up to three per player

State of Decay 3 lets each player run up to three settlements linked into a community network, layered with NPC enclaves you can recruit and ally with. What base building and defense look like in detail is still unannounced — the bases page separates confirmed facts from open questions.

What carries over

Permadeath stays. Steam's official description calls out permanent death as a core survival element — the series tradition continues in full.

What can't be compared yet

Plenty of State of Decay 2 systems have no announced SoD3 counterpart. Special infected (freaks) like SoD2's juggernauts and ferals have not been confirmed to return; the weapon list, skills, vehicles, and full base-building options are all unannounced. Treat any site publishing a "State of Decay 3 freaks list" or weapon stats as recycling SoD2 content, not reporting news. The FAQ keeps the quick answers current as announcements land.
